President Isaias Afwerki of Eritrea is in Egypt for a working visit at the invitation of President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, according to the Eritrean Ministry of Information.
The Eritrean Ministry of Information states that President Isaias will participate in a Summit of Heads of State on collective security, stability and partnership. The discussions cover the wider regional neighbourhood, including the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Arabian Gulf and Nile Basin. President Isaias and President el-Sisi are also expected to discuss the strengthening of bilateral relations between Eritrea and Egypt.
The visit comes as Egypt hosts the Alamein Africa Forum in New Alamein from October 2 to 4. President el-Sisi is scheduled to inaugurate the forum on October 3, with African leaders, government representatives, business leaders and African and international economic institutions taking part, according to Egypt’s State Information Service.
The African Union has also confirmed the gathering in New Alamein, bringing together African leaders, institutions and representatives of the private sector to discuss continental development priorities and their implementation.
Eritrea’s engagement comes at a time when the Red Sea and its surrounding maritime and regional spaces remain central to discussions on security, stability and cooperation.
Egypt and Eritrea have also emphasized the importance of cooperation on Red Sea affairs. In recent diplomatic discussions, Egypt stressed that security and governance of the Red Sea are the responsibility of the Red Sea littoral states.
President Isaias Afwerki’s visit places Eritrea–Egypt relations within a broader regional diplomatic setting involving African cooperation, Red Sea security and relations among neighbouring states.
