Memories of a Generation from Bet Tmhrti Sewra

Fifty years of Revolution School. Fifty years of memories, sacrifice, resilience, and a story carried forward by generations.

For those of us who experienced a part of this journey as children, this anniversary is far more than a milestone. It is a journey back to a childhood that was difficult, extraordinary, and unlike any other.

It was a childhood shaped by uncertainty and separation, but also by friendship, courage, unity, and hope. It was a childhood in which we learned lessons far beyond the classroom—lessons that have remained with us throughout our lives.

Our story did not begin with us.

Long before our generation, our parents and ancestors carried their own burdens, faced hardship, and made sacrifices for a future they believed in. Their courage, endurance, and strength became part of the foundation upon which our generation grew.

We Were Children

We were children.

We wanted to learn, to play, to laugh, to sing, and to simply be together. And despite the circumstances surrounding us, we found moments of joy.

We remember the mornings we shared, the lessons we learned, the games we played, the songs we sang, and the countless small moments that seemed ordinary at the time but have become precious memories today.

We remember our comrades.
We remember the laughter.
We remember the friendships.

But our childhood also carried another reality.

We knew longing.
We knew loneliness.
We knew uncertainty.
We knew grief.

There were emotions that were too heavy for children to fully understand and too deep to put into words.

Some tears were hidden.
Some pain was carried in silence.
Some nights were filled with questions that had no answers.

We were children, yet life taught us to be resilient long before we were old enough to understand the meaning of the word.

The Hope of Seeing Our Parents Again

Among the deepest memories we carry is the hope of seeing our parents again.

We waited.
We hoped.

We held on to the belief that one day our parents would return and that we would once again be together as families.

But sadly, not all of us were granted that moment.

Some children waited in vain.
Some parents never had the chance to see their children again.

That is a part of our history that remains painful, even after all these years.

When we remember, we do not remember only ourselves. We remember our brothers and sisters. We remember our comrades. We remember families separated by circumstances beyond the control of children.

Behind every child was a family.
Behind every family were sacrifices.

And behind those sacrifices were parents and ancestors whose strength we may not have fully understood at the time.

Today, with the wisdom that comes with years, we can look back and recognize the depth of their courage, their endurance, and what they carried for the generations that followed.

Their story is inseparable from ours.

Our Comradeship

When we think of Revolution School, we do not think only of a school.

We think of one another.
We were more than classmates.
We were comrades.
We shared a chapter of our lives that only we can truly understand.
We learned together. We played together. We sang together. We laughed together. We shared stories, dreams, fears, and hopes.

When one of us was homesick, the others understood.
When one of us was hurting, sometimes no words were necessary.

A glance could say everything.
A hand on a shoulder could offer comfort.
A shared meal, a song, a joke, or simply sitting beside one another could make a difficult day easier.

These may seem like small moments, but they became the threads that bound us together.

In difficult times, we stood by one another.
We learned to carry one another’s burdens.
We were children, but our comrades became a kind of family—a family created not by blood, but by shared experience.
And that bond has endured.

Years have passed. Our lives have taken us to different places. We have grown older, built families, and followed different paths.
Yet the connection remains.

Sometimes all it takes is a familiar face.

A name.
A song from our childhood.
An old photograph.
A story that only we remember.
And suddenly, decades disappear.
For a moment, we are children again.

Standing together.
Remembering together.
Comrades once more.
That is the enduring power of our shared past.

Courage, Resilience, Unity, and Respect

Our childhood taught us values that continue to live within us:

Courage.
Resilience.
Unity.
Solidarity.
Respect.
These were not merely words.

We lived them.
We learned to endure hardship.
We learned to remain standing when circumstances were difficult.
We learned to care for one another.
We learned that unity gives strength and that no one should have to carry a burden alone.

Much of that strength came from those who surrounded us—our parents, our teachers, our elders, and the generations that came before us.

They gave us more than education.
They gave us examples of endurance.

Our Love for Eritrea

At the heart of these memories is also our love for Eritrea.

For many of us, Eritrea is more than a country.

It is home.
It is family.
It is memory.
It is belonging.
It is part of who we are.

Our connection to Eritrea is deeply intertwined with the stories of our parents and ancestors—their courage, their hopes, their sacrifices, and the future they dreamed of for those who came after them.

For us, Revolution School became part of that larger story.
It became a place where a generation of children learned, grew, formed lifelong friendships, and carried memories that would remain long after they left its grounds.

The Memories Remain

Fifty years of Revolution School are fifty years of a story written by many generations.

We were among the children who were fortunate enough to experience a chapter of that story.

What we experienced there—the people we met, the friendships we formed, the laughter we shared, the songs we sang, the hopes we carried, the sadness we endured, and even the loneliness we learned to live with—has never truly left us.

The school has grown older.
Generations have moved forward.
Life has changed.
But memories do not simply disappear with time.

They remain within us.
They live in the stories we tell.
They live in the faces we remember.
They live in the names of those who are no longer with us.
And they live in the bond between those who were once children together.

For Our Comrades

This is why this story is not mine alone.

It belongs to all of us.
It is dedicated to our comrades—the children of Revolution School.
To those with whom we learned, played, sang, hoped, dreamed, and endured.
To those who were fortunate enough to see their parents again.
And especially to those who never had that opportunity.

It is dedicated to our brothers and sisters.
To our parents and ancestors, whose sacrifices became part of our history.
To our teachers, who guided us during extraordinary times.
And to every child who shared those years with us.
There are stories that can be told by one person.
But this is not one of them.

This is a shared memory. A shared journey. A shared history.

A Bond That Time Cannot Erase

Fifty years after the founding of Revolution School, our lives have taken different paths.

But the bond created during those childhood years remains.

We carry one another in our memories.
We carry the laughter.
We carry the songs.
We carry the difficult days.
We carry the moments of loneliness.
We carry the hope.
We carry the grief.
And we carry the names of those who are no longer here to tell their own stories.

We were children.
We laughed.
We cried.
We hoped.
We missed those we loved.
We learned to endure.
We learned to be resilient.
And above all, we learned to stand by one another.

The Revolution School has now reached its 50th anniversary.

But its legacy is not measured only in years.
Its true legacy lives in the people who passed through its doors—in the friendships that survived distance and time, in the memories that refuse to fade, and in the generations that continue to carry its story forward.

In us.
In our comrades.
In our families.
In the memories we share.
And as long as we remember one another, the story of Revolution School will never be forgotten.
